Teefefe – Unmask our kids T-Shirt

You will have seen the rumors about whom the song is about. What do you say to that? I completely understand why people are curious about the specifics of the song but, to me, who and what the song is about is not important. People are resonating with the song because it’s so honest, raw, and emotional. I was talking to my therapist just before this interview and she said, “I listen to this song. I’m an adult woman and I’m your therapist, but I relate to everything you’re going through.” It’s been insane to see people’s genuine reactions, no matter what situation they’re in.

How did the song come about? I wrote it about six months ago. I was aimlessly driving around my neighborhood listening to sad music and bringing up these emotions I hadn’t felt in a while. I’d just got my license, so I was relishing my freedom. When I got home, I sat down at the piano—and I love songs that feel like a diary entry and are confessional—so I took some lyrics from my diary and went from there. I wrote the first two verses and the chorus, then my producer and I wrote the bridge together, which is my favorite part of the song. It was a painless process.

The name Pieter Mulier will be familiar to true fashion obsessives. The Belgian designer has had a hand in some of the most influential collections of the past 20 years, having started his career as an intern at Raf Simons’s eponymous brand in the early aughts and risen to become Simons’s righthand at Jil Sander and Christian Dior. When Simons was appointed the chief creative officer of Calvin Klein in 2016, Mulier was installed as his number two, with the title of creative director of womenswear.

Once again, this coming season, designers are expected to present in a virtual format, which, as always, brings up the challenge of cutting through the noise of content over saturation. But for Fashion East’s class of 2021? Expect nothing less than brilliance—Hopkins, Alleyne, Davis, Dojaka and Heo will certainly captivate with their eagerly anticipated collections. The future is here and, as always, the fashion industry should be ready to take note.

What’s your prediction for 2021? The expansion of the resale mindset, particularly for bags but maybe across every category. COVID has fast-forwarded us two or three years in our behavior. Once the mindset shifts, I don’t see it going back. We will be thinking about the resale value but also sustainability; there’s going to be the emergence of a conscious consumer. Value-driven elements will meet societal or sustainability goals; we will join both together.

Vogue: Which pieces were your customers particularly responding to in 2020? Tracy Margolies: I’d say our customers are leaning into a more comfortable but put-together look. It’s neutral colors, head-to-toe knit dressings, pieces that were casual with comfort—but also fashionable. That’s really important to add. We’ve seen a rise in emotional investment pieces, from Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Chanel, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Dior. Some of those sales are with classic bags, but we also saw the mini bag take off. There’s been an interest in activewear, particularly if it’s logo’d. And with shoes, it’s been sneakers, slides, and combat boots.
